VERDIR — securing forest communities' land rights

Gabon · —

In Gabon, local communities and indigenous peoples face several challenges, including the recognition and enjoyment of their land rights.

The VERDIR project is implemented by the Brainforest – MINAPYGA – KEVA consortium. It aims to improve the legal framework for forest community rights, including community forests, customary use rights and securing rural forest areas.

In February 2026, the consortium gathered some twenty civil society actors in Libreville to revise the texts governing the creation, management and monitoring of community forests, as part of the Forest Code reform process.

Objectives

  • Contribute to a more coherent, equitable and effective legal framework.
  • Simplify procedures for establishing community forests.
  • Strengthen management committees and clarify land rights.
